1. Boxster S (2000)

2. 911 Carrera RS 2.7 (1973)

3. 356 Carrera 2 (1963)

4. 930 Turbo (1975-89)

5. 996 Carrera 4S (2003)

6. 928S (Unspecified)

7. 912 (1965-69)

8. 356 1500 Speedster (1953)

9. 968 Club Sport (1993)

10. 356B 1600 Super 90 (1962)

I find it really difficult to rank these ten cars, because they all qualify as driving machines — the best of the best of Porsche. But I have put the Boxster at the top of the list simply because Porsche has managed to do such a good job of building a mid-engine car that really does achieve all of the benefits that that configuration is supposed to provide. It's a masterpiece.

Some of my other selections might be seen as odd — the 912 for example. I'm including it because it's such a surprisingly pleasant and easy drive. In sharp contrast, there's nothing easy about the 930 Turbo, but it sets such a challenge that mastering it brings the satisfaction. The 996 Carrera 4S is a real tiger on the road with phenomenal capability. And I'll let the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 stand for all the fabulous 911s and their eagerness to take corners — a constant joy. — KL
