Windows 95/98/NT: I have a cable modem and the Volkswagen Electronic Manual Runs Very Slowly.

If your computer is connected to a cable modem and the Volkswagen Electronic Manual runs slowly then you may need to follow these directions.

  1. Click your Windows Start button.

  2. Select Find and select Files or Folders...

  3. Select your C: drive from the Look in: pull-down list and type hosts* into the Named: text box and click the Find Now button.

  4. You should find one or more files:

  5. If a file named Hosts is listed, click here and follow the directions for Editing the Hosts File.

  6. If a file named Hosts is not listed but Hosts.sam is listed, click here and follow the directions for Creating the Hosts File.

  7. If no Hosts files were found, click here and save the file to your system folder.

Editing the Hosts File
  1. If you were successful in locating a Hosts file, double-click the file and open it using Notepad:

  2. Add the line:

    127.0.0.1 localhost

Your Hosts file may have different entries than the sample shown here, but it must contain the line that begins with 127.0.0.1 ...

  3. Select Save from the File menu in Notepad to save this change. Finally, close Notepad.

  4. Restart your computer and try running the Volkswagen Electronic Manual again. The program should run much faster now. If not, please consult the other technical support documents dealing with slow performance on Windows.

Creating the Hosts File
  1. Right-click on the Hosts.sam file and select Rename:

  2. Remove the .sam extension and save the file as just: Hosts.

  3. Restart your computer and try running the Volkswagen Electronic Manual again. The program should run much faster now. If not, please consult the other technical support documents dealing with slow performance on Windows and contact us at 800-585-2382 if the problem persists.
